Formula Poems

"I wish ..." poems

All students have wishes and so this form of poem makes a good early writing assignment. Combined with the initial musical experiences of singing the poem, "Slithery, Slimy Earthworm and reading "The Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin, writing an "I wish ..." poem is an excellent follow-up activity.

Time Machine

I wish I were a time machine that flies,
Go to the future; find cures so no one dies,
Being smarter than your teacher,
Knowing more than your preacher,
What really happened I’d tell you the truth,
I’ll tell you what really happened to Babe Ruth,
If only I could,
I would.

"If I were ..." poemsThese poems allow students to imagine how they would feel if they could be something other than human. These poems allow students to explore ideas and feelings when considering the world from a different vantage point.

If I were a duck,
I would swim across the pond.
I could race the fish that swim with the light.
I could float in the wind.
I could waddle where I please.
